Xiao Anne S Tsui In this paper, we bring structural holes theory to different cultural contexts by studying the effect of structural holes in four high-tech companies in China and assessing whether they confer the benefits to individuals occupying the brokering position in a career network that have been found in Western contexts. On the level of national culture, we propose that the typical collectivistic culture of China will dampen the effects of structural holes. On the organizational level, we propose that in organizations that foster a high-commitment culture—a culture that emphasizes mutual investment between people—the control benefits of structural holes are dissonant with the dominant spirit of cooperation, and the information benefits of structural holes cannot materialize due to the communal-sharing values in such organizations. Empirical results of network surveys confirm our hypotheses, and interview data add depth to our explanations. Brokers do not fit with the collectivistic values of China. Further, the more an organization possesses a clan-like, high-commitment culture, the more detrimental are structural holes for employees' career achievements such as salary or bonus, even after controlling for a host of other factors that may influence these career outcomes. The data were collected from 272 executives using standard questionnaires. The multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the assumptions of association among variables. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to find the differences in variables across various locations and regions of India. The self-calculative behaviour and goal-achieving modes of behaviour play positive roles in predicting preferences towards innovation championing strategies and intrapreneurship orientation respectively. Multi-mediation models were constructed to reveal the relationship between stressors (challenge and hindrance stressors) and UPB, and the mediating roles of individual anxiety, attentiveness, and anger. The results of 375 questionnaires indicated that challenge stressors had no significant relationship with UPB due to the presence of the suppression effect. View Show abstract From Followers to Market Leaders: Asian Electronics Firms in the Global Economy Article Apr 2007 Henry Wai-chung Yeung This paper aims to explain how a number of leading electronics firms from Asian newly industrialised economies of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan are articulated into global production networks and become major players in their respective market niches. Developing a triangular theoretical framework, I seek to explain the complex relationships between the dynamic articulation of these leading Asian electronics firms into different global production networks and their simultaneous upgrading from typical followers to market leaders. As a critique of the dominant developmental state discourse, I argue that the interplay between corporate strategies and home base advantages within the context of changing global production networks can offer a better explanation of the differentiated competitive outcomes of these Asian firms. This paper draws upon original data collected through personal interviews with top executives from leading electronics firms in the four Asian newly industrialised economies. I conclude the paper with some implications for theory and policy in relation to corporate development in Asian economies. There is now mounting pressure all over the world for academics to publish in the most-cited journals and rake in as many citations to their work as possible. Citation impact is such a major source of joy and anguish that Judge, Cable, Colbert, and Rynes's (2007) comprehensive analysis of its ante-cedents is a timely signpost to help academics to cope with the constant demand to prove their rel-evance and impact. The major goals of my com-mentary are to reflect on some of the findings of Judge and colleagues from an international (i.e., non-U.S.) perspective, with specific reference to the geographic region in which I work, East Asia, and to explore the implications of the rising impor-tance of citation impact for management research there. Demand for Academic Excellence in East Asia East Asia is the only economically developed region in the world that is not part of the Euro-American cultural cluster. Geographically, this re-gion includes mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, and Korea, but I include Singa-pore in my analysis because it is wealthy and has a visibly Chinese cultural heritage. Despite the fact that mainland China is the only developing country in the region, its huge size and hyper growth actu-ally add substantial weight to the importance of the region. Economic might engenders academic aspira-tions, and all East Asian countries, including main-land China, crave for world-class universities on their soil. Throughout East Asia, governments have engaged in various selective investment programs to leapfrog their best universities to levels rivaling the likes of Harvard and Cambridge. In Asia, only Japanese univer-sities are in the top 100 in this ranking, but several universities from other East Asian countries are improving steadily, and some will probably make it into the top 100 soon. The favorable global ranking of top East Asian universities is primarily driven by their research performance in the science areas. In fact, top stu-dents in East Asia traditionally go into the science areas, and it is no accident that East Asia is strong in these areas. However, administrators of the top universities in East Asia are now beginning to de-mand that academics in business and other social sciences match the research output of their col-leagues in the science areas because they realize that a top university cannot just excel in the science areas. Yet, it is important for several reasons. Not only does it possess huge markets for products (with over 400 million people in just the four countries we focus on here), but it also has rich sources of raw materials and goods in their own right. In this collection of essays, we explore recent developments across a broad spectrum of economic systems, business enterprises and management behaviours in the region. Many diverse facets of these fields of study are covered. The empirical data used for the study were obtained from emic replication studies previously carried out by the authors in South Korea and the United Kingdom respectively. High degrees of overlap and convergence were revealed, with the vast majority of managerial behaviors (87.75 South Korean and 90.53 British) that distinguish effective managers from ineffective managers being found to be the same, similar, or congruent in meaning. Overall, the findings bring into question the validity of past claims in the cross-cultural management literature which assert that particular types and styles of managerial and leadership behavior are contingent upon the cultural aspects of specific societies and countries. Our study is a rare example of Type 4 indigenous management research, and our findings are illustrative of what has become known as geocentric (emic-and-etic) knowledge. Of the Indian findings 100 were found to be convergent in meaning with 94.43 of the equivalent South Korean findings. This has led to the identification of a two-factor emergent Asian behavioural model of perceived managerial and leadership effectiveness comprised of 16 positive (effective) and 6 negative (ineffective) generic behavioural criteria. The research findings lend no support to claims that national culture has a major impact on managerial and leadership practices, styles, and effectiveness. Leading scholars take stock of what has been learned and give clear directions towards greater rigor and relevance for research in this region.Students of economics and strategic management have developed various theories and perspectives to examine corporate activities relevant to firm diversification (Brush, 1996; Ramanujam and Varadarajan, 1989; Reed and Luffman, 1986; Rumelt, 1974). However, despite diversification being wellresearched in Western countries, the topic as an academic inquiry is relatively new in Asia, where environments and business systems have characteristics considerably different from Western society. In addition to the distinctiveness of Asian societies vis-a-vis those of the West, there is also great variation among Asian countries themselves. Take an example of GDP per capita. A gap exists not only between different countries but also across regions which share similar cultural inheritances. For instance, mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were assumed to operate within Greater China Economic Zone where Chinese traditional culture dominated in social norms and values system. There is also variation in the economic environments within the Greater China Economic Zone. Taiwan and Hong Kong have had a relatively developed market economy and their governments were largely kept away from business operations. By contrast, in mainland China the overall economic institution is in a transition from a centrally planned economy to a market one. A major characteristic of a transition economy is that the government exerts a strong influence over both macro and micro economic activities by allocation of resources allocation and control of or even direct administrative intervention in business organizations (Chen, 1995; Redding, 1990). These differences between Western and Asian societies, and among Asian societies, have suggested many questions to scholars studying diversification. For example, does diversification in Asia exhibit the same or similar characteristics as that in Western countries if there are distinctive differences between the two societies. Are Western theories appropriate to the study of firm diversification in Asia. Does the research of Asia's diversification require new context-specific design for the purpose of testing the limits of Western theories and conclusions. Furthermore, given the great discrepancy across Asian countries, will such inter-societal variance within Asia cause organizational differences in terms of firm behavior. In this chapter we review previous studies of corporate diversification in seven major Asian countries and areas, including mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India. It begins with a brief review of Western theories of firm diversification. The second section will introduce findings from a literature survey of existing empirical studies in the seven Asian countries and areas. Building on literature survey findings, we will in the third section attempt to identify distinctive characteristics of firm diversification in Asia.
