Forum questions or problems Test Posting Forum Make sure the engine gets sufficient cooling and has a large enough exit in the cowl to let the hot air escape. After 8 gallons or so, use a high quality oil and you should get years of fun from your engine. BlairUse dinosaur oil. Run 32:1 in the engine for a couple gallons. Maybe lean it to 40:1 after 2 or 3 gallons. Switch to a high quality oil after 5--8 gallons. Just don't run it hard or do any extended hovering or torque rolls for the first 2--3 gallons. You can pull vertical and hammer it for a nice upline--but back off on it after a few seconds. Don't run it wide open for extended periods of time until it's broke in at least a couple gallons. I run mine easy for 2--3 gallons at 32:1--and then I lean my oil mix out to 40:1 and start thrashing on it. Haven't busted one yet. Don't lug it down with a huge prop. That builds heat. Heat kills engines--especially new engines. Run a bit smaller prop and let it spin for a couple gallons. I have several G-62 engines that I bought new. I run them with a 22-8 or a 21-8 for 2 gallons. Let them spin and run freely up in the 7500--8000RPM range for 2 or 3 gallons. Then I switch out to a 22-10 or 23-10 and lean my oil to 40:1. They run fine. Your engine probably won't like those kinds of RPM--but you get the idea. Don't lug it down to 6000RPM with a 26-10 prop right outta the box. Use a 23-12 or a 24-10 to break it in and let it spin. BR289--Ralph's just tell everyone the way it is.You want it to heat up, not over heat, and cool down over numerous cycles. There is no set amount, nor is there a number of gallons for this process to be complete. Seating the rings is another part of this process. The reason for the thermal cycling is because the casting process leaves the metal molecules in a pretty disorganized state. That casting is also a lot weaker than it needs to be. By thermal cycling the engine those metal molecules will naturally attempt to link up to other molecules in the correct order, making the engine stronger than it was new. That was pretty simplified, but relatively accurate. So mount the engine in the plane, get the correct size prop, tune the engine for the best performance while still being just slightly rich on the high end, and go fly.I think I'll bolt it on and just fly it.I shouldnt have to explain what I do or whatever. You've told the guy all he needs to know.This does a couple things. One is that the engine will stay running for the entire flight and not leave you with a dead stick. The second is that correct tuning will create the required temperature levels in the engine to perform the break in process. It's possible to run so much fuel through an engine that it never warms up. Super rich settings when breaking in a gasser are not good. Increasing the amount of oil used in the mix, if you're so inclined, is a much better way of protecting the engine than running the mixture rich. Oil ratios anywhere between 32 and 50-1 all work just fine during the process. During the first flight you'll be able to note any minor tuning corrections that will need made. I've run from 70 to 80-1 mix with them both but a 50-1 mix would be just fine as well. Just watch your plugs and adjust the mixtures and oil content as needed to get a good burn. I finally opened up the low needle to 2 full turns out and got it to start.It sounds like it is hitting real hard and when it does, it dies.I figure it is too rich on low end but when I lean it up a small bit, it is too hard to crank.What happens when you run the engine around 1.25 turns open on the low. I've had this unit for years, and when a drive goes bad, it's so easy to just buy another, pop it in, and rebuild the RAID. Recently the controller has been reporting ECC errors from one of the drives. It was able to correct all of those errors, but I figured I better replace the drive before it dies. I have also removed the good drive from the array and put in the bad drive (the one that had all the ECC errors) to see if I could rebuild the array using the bad drive, but that didn't work either. Could the controller have gone bad, even though all the other functionality seems to be working. I can boot into the OS fine, it's just the rebuilding that won't work. Last year when I rebuilt the array, I had tried using a slightly smaller replacement drive and the controller gave an error about the drive being smaller and it wouldn't even let me start the rebuild. This time it did not display any error and let me start the rebuild, so I know the problem doesn't have to do with drive size. Then the progress will say 1, and it remains stuck at 1 until I reboot again. Then it says 2 and stays stuck at 2. Maybe I should try rebooting my computer 100 times to see if the array is completely rebuilt after that? The good hard drive no longer boots from port 1, but it does boot from port 0 (which is strange, since it booted fine from port 1 yesterday, and also port 0 is where the replacement drive was plugged into and it couldn't do a rebuild). I just ordered the same RAID controller off ebay and hopefully that will solve the problem. Either way it sounds like it could be a bug in the firmware. The last replies came very quickly, they even sent a mail with an attached tool for the win2003 problem. I just wonder, why the almighty 3dm2 tool cannot re-enable the cache if windows disables it. Tech 7.Of course not using the 3WARE crap-installer (which failed as usual, i actually tried), but by using debian packages some nice guy made here:While not exactly made for gentoo, i was able to convert the.deb files to.tgz using 'alien -t --scripts'. Then I unpacked the.tgz, and put the stuff into their directories. I used the old gentoo 3dmd2 init script, generated the certificate using openssl (for commandline see the debian scripts) and everything seems to work perfectly fine. And of course i opened a ticket at 3ware and requested a zip'ed or tar'ed version of 3DM2 while telling them that their installer is oversized non-working crap. Oh, only about 4 months for a fix! About the problem not being able to install (with 9.5.0.1) on 64Bit. The new 9.5.0.1 is released and yet we are having some problem with this. The engineering and testing team are working on this 9.5.0.1 codeset in order to release a error free 3DM2 tool. We will let you know once if they are complete with this.
