SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor re lated to loss of control and tip-over accid ents which can re sult in severe injury or death. All slopes require extra cautio n. If you cannot back up the slope or if you feel un easy on it, do not mow it. For your safety, use t he slope gauge include d as part of this manual to measure slopes befor e operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees as shown on th e slope gauge, do not operate this unit on that area or serious injury could result. DO: 1. Mow up and down slopes, not across. Exercise extreme caution when chan ging direction on slopes. 2. Watc h for holes, ruts, bu mps, rocks, or other hidden objects. Uneven te rrain could overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles. 3. Use slow speed. Choose a low enough speed setting so that you will not have to stop while on the slope. Tires may lose traction on slopes even though the brakes are f unctioning properly. Always keep machine in gear when going down slop es to take advantage of engine br aking action. 4. Follow the ma nufacturer ’s recommendation s for wheel weights or coun terweights to improve stability. 5. Use extra care with gr ass catchers or other attachments. These can ch ange the stability of the machine. 6. Keep all movement on the slopes slo w and gradual. Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction. Rapid engagement or braking could cause the front of the machine to lift an d rapidly flip over backwards which could cause serious injury. 7. Avoid starti ng or stopping on a slope. If tires lose traction, disenga ge the blade(s) and procee d slowly straight down the slope. DO NOT: 1. Do no t turn on s lopes unless necessar y; then, tu rn slowly and gradually downhill, if possible. 2. Do not mow near drop -offs, ditches or embankments. The mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge of a cliff, ditch, or if an edge cave s in. 3. Do not try to stabilize th e machine by putting your foot on the grou nd. 4. Do not use a grass catcher on steep slopes. 5. Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced traction could cause sliding. 6. Do not coast downhill. Over-speedi ng may cause the operato r to lose cont rol of the ma chine resultin g in serious injury or death. 7. Do not tow heavy pull behind atta chments (e.g. loaded dump cart, lawn roller, etc.) on slopes greater than 5 d egrees. When going down hill, the extra weight te nds to push the tracto r and may cause you to loose co ntrol. (e.g. tractor ma y speed up, braking and steerin g ability are reduced, attachment may jack- k nife and cau se tractor t o overturn). CHILDREN 1. Tragic a ccidents c an occur if the oper ator is not alert to the prese nce of children. Ch ildren are often attracted to the mac hine and th e mowing activity. They do not under stand the dang ers. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them. a. Keep children out of the mowing area and in watchful care of a responsible a dult other than the opera tor. b. Be alert and turn machine off if a ch ild enters the area. c. Bef o re and while backing, loo k behind and down for small children. The y may fall o ff and be ser iously injured or interfer e with safe machine operation. e. Use extreme car e when approa ching blind corners, doorways, sh rubs, trees or other objects that may block your vision of a child who may run into th e machine. f. Disengage the cutting bl ade(s) before traveling in r everse. Th e “ No-Cut-In Reve rse” feature is a reminder not to cut in reverse and to help avoid back over accidents. Do not defeat it. g. Keep children away from hot or running engines. They can suffer burns from a hot muffler. h. Remove key when machine is unat tended to prevent unau thorized op eration. 9. Never allow children und er 14 years old to operate the machine. Children 14 years old and over should read and unde rstand the op eration instruct ions and safety rules in this manual and should be trained and supervised by a par ent. TOWING 1. Tow only w ith a machine that has a hitch designed for towing. Do not att ach towed equipment except at the hitch point. 2. Follow the manufa cturers recommend ation for weight limits for towed equipm ent and towing on slopes. 3. Never allow children or others in or on towed equipment. 4. On slopes, the weight of the t owed equipment may cause loss of traction and loss of contro l. 5. Travel slowly and allow extra distan ce to stop. 6. Do not coast downhill. SERVICE SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE: 1. To avoid personal injury or prop erty damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and th e vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur wh en gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and change cl othes immediately. a. Use only an approved gasoline co ntainer. b. Never fill containers inside a vehic le or on a truck or trailer bed with a plast ic liner. Always place contain ers on the ground away f r om your vehicle before filling. c. When practical, remove gas-powered equipment from th e truck or trailer and re fuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equip m ent on a t railer with a portable conta iner, rather th an from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. d. Keep the n ozzle in contact wit h the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at a ll times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. e. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. f. Never fuel ma chine indoors. g. Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before r efueling. h. Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than three inches belo w the top of the filler neck to allow space fo r fuel expa nsion. i. Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely. j. If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off th e engine and equipment. Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before st arting the engin e. k. To reduce fire hazards, keep mach ine free of grass, leaves, or other d ebris build-u p. Clean up oil or fue l spillage and remove any fuel soaked deb ris. l. Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an ope n flame, spark or pilot light as on a water h eater, space heater, furnace, clothe s dryer or other gas appliances. m. Allow a machine to cool at least five minutes before sto ring. GENERAL SERVICE: 1. Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. En gine exhaust contains carbo n monoxide, an odorle ss, and deadly gas. 2. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspect ing, make certain the blade( s) and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wir e and ground against th e engine to prevent un intended starting. 3.
