Many years ago, a young boy was killed at a local outdoor range when his 22 rifle round bounced off of a rock!I use the pellets instead of loose powder, they are 50 grains each. Main thing is to clean after every 2-3 shots and lube the barrel, I use bore butter for mine. I use 100 grains and that is plenty for deer.Take the average group size and when you find the smallest group, that should be the one you use for your powder charge. My gun likes 115 grains of Triple 7 FFG. If you shoot too much powder, it will not get fully ignited before leaving the barrel and you are wasting it plus your accuracy will suffer. I killed 1 deer this season at 251 yards and 2 at around 275 yards with my muzzleloader and none of them took a step. PS, shoot an all lead bullet that dissipates all its energy in the critter. The copper jacketed bullets are too hard to expand and just zip right through. Good luck!!Use of this site indicates your consent to the Terms of Use. I don't know if the above articles are just someone with an agenda or is this something to be greatly concerned over. I am using recommended powerbelt bullets, 100 g of triple 7 pellets and 209 primers. In the older models the barrels were faulty and CVA got their butts sued off. They are a much better Muzzle Loader now. If you look at your owners manual it will tell you that any claims should be made against the old company. Straight off their web-site. I had a CVA that was bought probably 20 years ago and hadn't had it but a few days and got a letter telling me not to shoot it until I received the new barrel that were sending me. I could either pay to ship the old barrel back or just mail back a signed affidavit that I had destroyed the original barrel. Something about the breech plugs blowing out. Wakeman got booted off a couple years before that - not so much for asking why CVA wouldn't post the proof test rating on the barrels as it was for stirring the pot and creating bad press for CVA. His claim was that CVA barrels weren't 'safe' because they didn't proof stamp their barrels. However, their barrels at the time were made in the same Spanish factory where other ML companies had their barrels made. Same steel, same building even. Knight and a couple others had their barrels stamped, but CVA either ignored Wakeman or just flat out refused to because of the fuss he made. I don't know if if was because of Wakeman or not, but CVA's 'magnum' muzzleloaders from back then were only rated to shoot 150gr of PELLETS, or 100gr max of powder. All their magnum MLs since '04-05 or so will shoot 150gr of either one (don't quote me on that, as I haven't looked at them ALL to verify:wink. What's crazy is that if you read the fine print on the older boxes of pellets they strictly prohibit stacking more than 2 pellets at a time:head: The new ones may be different, but I haven't bought pellets in a while. I get my best accuracy with about 90gr of powder in that gun anyway, so I don't worry about it.I recently bought one off a guy I work with, buckhorn model. Its supposed to be magnum capable, but I dont have any reason to push it that hard. I shot it sunday and it performed quite well. To say the least I was very impressed with its performance. I dont have any issues with cva for a quality affordable general purpose ml.:thumb:Problem fixed. Most of the newer CVA's (don't think the Wolf is included) even use the Bergara Barrels, semi custom jobs noted for their accuracy. You would be suprised at the lawsuits they pay for damage caused by double loads, smokeless powder, etc - user fault, but they still pay because it is easier to settle out of court.Love them little rifles. No worries here.Gonna go shoot it tomorrow. I think the owners manual says only 90 grains of powder but i'll have to read it again because I was trying to get out and bowhunt. Not all of them can shoot or are made to shoot 150 so don't just do it because others are.:up:I had a bit of trouble getting it to shoot consistent - more like a pattern than a group. I tried all sorts of loads, powder, pellets, load volume, bullets, etc. By the time I was done, I had bought scope bases and mounts and put a scope on and still had some issues. Also had ignition issues - even after getting the musket cap upgrade for it, though was much more reliable with the musket caps. Carried it for another season and bought an Encore 209 Magnum and all my problems went away. Gave the CVA to my father in law and he doesn't have any problems. Of course, he is using open sights and doesn't shoot it past about 75 yards (and likely won't). I am one to stretch shots out a bit farther and want a little more predictability.I haven't had any problems yet. I use 90 grains of powder pushing a 295 grain Power Belt. It isn't a long ranger by no means, but it works for me. These articles make me wonder??? Hmmmmm. Pretty scary.
