Le vel Knob Controls the eff ect’ s output le vel. T urn this knob clockwise to incr ease the output lev el, and counter -clockwise to decrease output lev el. With the LO BAND and HI B AND knobs at their minimum position, turning the LEVEL knob to its maximum position giv es you unity gain. 2. X-Ov er Knob Controls the cr ossover fr equency separating the LO BAND and HI BAND compressors. The X-Ov er’ s minimum position is 100Hz and maximum position is 3kHz. Fr equencies below the cr ossover setting ar e controlled b y the LO BAND compression knob. Frequencies abov e the crosso ver setting ar e controlled by the HI BAND compression knob. Which brings me to another point: Digitech makes a big deal about how they designed this pedal in conjunction with dbx, meaning to give you the idea that it will perform just like a professional dbx unit--but it does not. Lo band sets the amount of compression below the x-over point, Hi band sets the amount above that point. I wasn't able to get the tone overall to have a decent sound quality unless both bands were set to similar amounts; and in fact the only setting that actually sounded good to me was with the Lo and Hi knobs at about 10:00. At that one setting it plausibly reminded me of a dbx 163X, and was not too noisy. The more you turn up each band, the noisier it gets, and at high settings the noise is insanely bad. There is a secondary output jack that includes emulation of a 4x10 speaker cab, for recording directly. I have no opinion about the quality or usefulness of the speaker emulation, since I don't like the pedal overall. It has parameters for level, attack, EQ (tone), and sustain. These are pretty basic parameters as far as compression pedals go, so those who have experience with guitar compression pedals should be used to this pedal before even using it. Even if you don't have experience with compressors of any kind, the make up of this pedal is easy enough to follow that you don't need a manual and will be able to figure it out on your own. SOUND QUALITY The sound of the Digitech X-Series Main Squeeze is sub par in my opinion. While it will indeed get the job done as far as compressing your signal, to me it sounds too digital and colors your sound a little bit too much. Like a compressors, it will definitely add some sustain to your sound, but as far as playing rhythm parts, for me it really squeezes your sound too much and doesn't give it much room to breath, even if you don't have the compression level up too high. My styles range from folk to hard rock, with heavy power-pop leanings -- Big Star, not Green Day. I was looking for ways to enrich my 12-string electric sounds and this unit did the job, adding sustain, fluidity and intensity to the sound. This pedal doesn't interact with other effects well. It added a substantial amount of noise to my tone so that when I wasn't playing, the hum was deafening, and not just with single-coil pickups. It's difficult to find the sweet spots on the settings to make this pedal work with my Line 6 Pod 2.0 or other effects I wanted to use, such as an Ibanez Tone-Lok Delay and a Durham SexDrive. Pretty good, solid metal. The one I bought was used so it had chipped paint, not the manufacturer's fault. However, this is yet another pedal with a super-hard-to-access battery compartment. At least you don't need a screwdrive on this one, but the metal buttons to release the hatch are so far recessed on the sides that you'd have to have long nails or a key to poke them in. Why do effects manufacturers so often overlook or undervalue this aspect of the design. I like having this pedal on standby -- I was able to get the best slide tone I've ever found by adding it to my recording chain. If you're not going to use more than one effect at the same time it doesn't matter which order you use. Using compression before a tube distortion can produce more clipping and a thicker distortion sound; it probably doesn't matter with your digital pedals. Some modulation effects (like chorus, phase, etc) can disappear if placed before a distortion. Echo effects like delay and reverb are usually placed last because most musicians want to echo their effects, not place effects on their echoes. Most people use envelope filters, wahs, compressors and distortions before the amp even when a loop is available. Modulation and echo effects sound good in a loop, but be sure to check whether the loop is series or parallel (parallel loops have blend knobs): if you have a parallel loop you'll want to set the blend knob on your modulation effects near 100. The digitech has a parametric eq that the boss dont have and it allows for other colors of compression. Try swapping the compressors to see which one is best first and which last. Try the synth at the end of the chain as an octaver to bring back any lost bottom. Get a power supply and decent leads to avoid any onstage embarrassment.
