When you start talking about fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers, the 3500's capacity maxes out at 35,500 pounds. Ford's smallest pickup is powered solely by a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that burns gasoline. Rated at 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, it's quite stout, and it's paired with the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the larger F-150. It doesn't pull as much weight as the competing diesels, but it isn't too far behind. Every Ranger, including 2WD and 4WD trucks, have a maximum tow rating of 7500 pounds. That's just 200 pounds less than the diesels in the class, but it's 500 pounds more than the V-6 powered Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. The 430-hp 3.5-liter PowerBoost Hybrid can tow up to 12,400 pounds with four-wheel drive. The base 290-hp 3.3-liter turbocharged V-6 makes a peak 400 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and with this combo the rear-wheel-drive model can tow up to 8200 pounds. For rear-drive 5.0-liter V-8 models with a 141.5-inch wheelbase, that number jumps to 13,000 pounds. The F-150 can tow more when powered by its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. That engine is rated 400 horsepower with 500 lb-ft of torque. With all that torque, the F-150 can pull 14,000 pounds. Its optional 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel V-8 now puts out 1050 lb-ft of torque. That puts it way ahead of the Duramax diesel offered by Chevy and GMC and just ahead of the Cummins HO in the Ram, which makes 1000 lb-ft. The powertrain gives the F-250 a max tow rating of 20,000 with four-wheel drive. In the F-350 those numbers climb to 24,200. It gets crazier. The 2WD F-450 Gooseneck max towing is 37,000 pounds. The two trucks are exactly the same size and use the same chassis, suspensions, engines, and transmissions. As you would expect, their capabilities are the same as well. The Canyon is available with three engines, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V-6, and a Duramax 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder. And like the Colorado, it tows best with the 186-horsepower diesel that produces 369 lb-ft of torque. The diesel is offered on the SLE, SLT, All-Terrain, and Denali models but not on the base SL trim. Only on the two crew-cab body styles is it paired with a six-speed automatic.Buyers should be aware, however, that the GMC has lower maximum tow ratings. With the 277-horsepower Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel, which produces 460 lb-ft of torque at just 1500 rpm, the Sierra can tow a maximum of 9100 pounds. That's 200 pounds shy of the Chevy's capability. Like the Chevy, the GMC tows more when equipped with the available 6.2-liter V-8, which is rated 420-horsepower at 5600 rpm and the same 460 lb-ft of torque but at a higher 4100 rpm. With this engine, max towing is 12,100 pounds. Remember, the Silverado 1500 can tow up to 13,400 pounds with this configuration. It's also offered in three-quarter-ton 2500 and one-ton 3500 configurations powered by GM's 6.6-liter Duramax diesel. The turbocharged V-8, which makes 445 horsepower and a behemoth 910 lb-ft of torque, is backed by an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission and can pull considerably more weight than its 401 horsepower 6.6-liter naturally aspirated gas V-8. With that engine, the 2500 model can tow a maximum of 14,500 pounds, but that number jumps to 18,500 pounds with the diesel. The 3500 can yank around up to 16,800 pounds with the gas engine and 20,000 with the diesel. Like the Chevy, the GMC's numbers climb when you start talking about fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers, with the 3500's capacity maxing out at 35,500 pounds. It's the only truck that doesn't use a conventional ladder-type frame. Instead, it's built like a crossover and shares much of its chassis with the Honda Pilot. The Ridgeline, which is only available in crew-cab configuration with four doors, also shares its 3.5-liter V-6 and nine-speed automatic with the Pilot. Like in the SUV, the engine has 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque at 4700. As a result, the Ridgeline's tow ratings don't set the world on fire. Two-wheel drive models can pull only 3500 pounds, and the all-wheel drive Ridgeline is maxed out at 5000 pounds. And yes, those are the same tow ratings bestowed on the Pilot. Although Jeep offers a turbo-diesel V-6 in the Wrangler Unlimited, the engine isn't available in the truck. Instead, every Gladiator is powered by Fiat Chrysler's 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6, which it shares with the Wrangler. It makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm, so it isn't the powerhouse of the class, however, it is available with a six-speed manual transmission. An eight-speed automatic is optional, and just like the Wrangler, every Gladiator is four-wheel drive. With the manual, this truck has a maximum tow rating of 4500 pounds, but the Gladiator Sport model can pull up to 7650 pounds when equipped with the automatic. That number drops to 7000 pounds for the Rubicon model, which performs best off-road. For 2020, an all-new 310-horsepower direct-injection 3.8-liter V-6 becomes the only engine offered, replacing the truck's 152-horsepower 4-cylinder and 261-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6. That's best-in-class horsepower. The engine's 281 lb-ft of torque, however, only matches the output of the old 4.0-liter. Its archaic five-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions are also history, replaced by a nine-speed automatic. The Frontier is still offered with 2WD or 4WD in king cab and crew cab body styles. Unfortunately, that's the extent of the upgrades, and the Nissan's dated chassis holds back its ability to tow. Its max tow rating of 6700 pounds is better than the Honda's, but falls behind all of its other mid-size competitors. That's a good thing, as it's the worst-selling truck in its class. Every Titan is still powered by Nissan's venerable 5.6-liter V-8, but the engine has been recalibrated for 91-octane premium fuel. This has increased its peak output numbers to 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. However, if you fill the tank with less expensive 87-octane gasoline, the engine's output is dialed back to last year's ratings, 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. Nissan has also ditched the Titan's seven-speed automatic for a nine-speed, and it has radically lowered its rear-axle gear ratio from 2.93 to 3.69:1. The changes have improved the truck's maximum towing capacity slightly to 9370. The Titan and Titan XD are the only trucks that offer a gooseneck trailer hitch standard on everything above the base trim level, pushing the max towing capacity to 11,000 pounds. Now every Nissan Titan XD is powered by the same 5.6-liter V-8 as the regular Titan. The engine gets the same recalibration that has increased its peak output numbers to 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Nissan has also replaced the XD's seven-speed automatic with a nine-speed, and it has lowered its rear-axle gear ratio. Now offered only as a 4x4 crew cab with a 6.5-foot bed, the XD is almost 15 inches longer, with a 151.6-inch wheelbase, and three inches taller than the regular Titan. And it can tow more.First up is the Ram 1500 's all-new third-generation V-6 EcoDiesel, which is shared with the Jeep Wrangler. The Italian-made VM Motori 3.0-liter is rated 260-horsepower at 3600 rpm and 480 lb-ft of peak torque at 1600 rpm. That's the highest torque rating of all half-ton diesels. With this engine, the Ram 1500 is rated to pull up to 12,560 pounds, which is more than other half-ton diesels. But the Ram can pull a bit more with the less expensive 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Producing 395 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 410 lb-ft of torque at 3750 rpm, the Hemi once again proves there's no replacement for displacement.
