sino truck manualWhether you just found out Whether you just found out you set a code for a knock sensor or discovered an oil leak from the oil pan on your Chevrolet S10 Blazer make sure you prepare before you start the repair. Preparation of the work area, having the proper tools and equipment plus knowing how long the job will take is just a few of the items we’ll uncover. Let’s use the oil pan leak on a Chevrolet Blazer as an example. Just because the engine oil pan is soaked with fluid doesn’t mean the pan gasket itself is leaking. If you bought yourself an oil pan gasket set and started the repairs you won’t have what you need to fix the vehicle on hand. This is why properly planning for a car repair project becomes so important. Because of the weight of the transmission and complexity of the procedure mechanics consider this a two-person job in the driveway. With that said, a rear main seal, timing cover and oil pan gasket replacement goes much quicker with the vehicle raised on a hoist. However, I’m also going to take this a step further and talk about researching solutions on the Internet before you begin the car repair project. Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks with V-8 engines often set knock sensor check engine light codes. So naturally you break out the factory auto repair manual to find a component location diagram. Now you see that these parts are mounted underneath the intake manifold. After reviewing the step-by-step guide for the removal and installation of the intake manifold a clear vision comes into focus of the complexity of the procedure. Not only can you learn from people who’ve already done the repair you might discover some shortcuts. Watch several clips of people dealing with these repairs. In this particular situation, when replacing a Chevrolet knock sensor, I see some people opt for relocating the sensor to the topside of the intake manifold.http://es21sys.com/userfiles/datamax-dmx-e-4304-manual.xml

Now with the input from the service manual combined with the real world experience of others, you’re ready to plan your car repair project. Using the examples throughout this article, what we thought might take a few hours actually takes a full day or more. In addition to allotting the proper amount of time we also want to make sure the right tools for the job stand at the ready. Raising the motor provides clearance between the oil pan and the cross member. The tools required include a floor jack and several blocks of wood. Having these items on hand allows us to continue working without stopping to source this additional equipment. And the engine oil and filter isn’t the only supplies needed. We’ll need rags, razor blades and scrapers to clean the gasket surfaces. If we’re pulling off the engine intake we also need two gallons of premixed antifreeze. You’re more likely to find success if you can complete the assignment from start to finish. When you fail to properly plan for all of the possible contingencies you lengthen the repair time and reduce the chances of victory. Now go get yourself a vehicle specific PDF auto repair manual. It happens to everyone at least once. You could break a window, but then you’d have to buy a new one and that sounds a little expensive. Keep in mind, the age of your truck will determine how easy this feat will be.https://formations.fondationmironroyer.com/en/node/12110 Newer vehicles with automatic locks are typically quite a bit harder. The downside is that you have to have door locks that stick up in order for this trick to work. If your truck has this type of lock, you’re in luck. Give this trick a try. This is a type of knot that you can tighten by simply pulling on the ends of the string. It’ll probably be a tight fit but you should be able to get the string in there. Most seals give enough to allow for enough space. Once it has a firm grip pull up and the door should unlock. Easy peasy! I bet you didn’t know you could unlock a car door with a string! But, you have to have a certain type of door handle for this trick to work. If your truck is newer, it probably won’t work. You have to be able to reach the lock mechanism through the door handle and newer trucks aren’t that easy. Remove your antenna and insert one end into the door through the handle. Once it feels like you’re making a solid connection, push the antenna forward and the door should unlock. Instead of having to buy a specially made Slim Jim, you can use a coat hanger. This technique often works on trucks with manual locks. You’re going to slide the coat hanger down into the door on the outside of your window. The point is to find the control arm, grab it with the hook, and pull it up to unlock the door. It might take a few tries to find the arm, but once you’ve got it, you’re in! If you think you’ll be locking your keys in the car a lot, it may be a good idea to invest in a wedge set. Once you get a big enough crack you can insert an air wedge and pump it full of air to widen the crack even more. We’ve mentioned the antenna, but that only works in short spaces. The antenna will just telescope down if you try to push on your door locks after having slipped it in the door crack. It’s pretty easy to remove the windshield wipers from most vehicles without special tools and you can always count on it to be on hand! And with good reason.http://i-facet.com/images/1040-manual-pdf.pdf You can easily damage the door, especially if you end up doing it a few times. Make sure you get a set that is compatible with your make and model of car. The great thing about this method is that it doesn’t cause damage to the door. You’ll also need a special automotive torsion wrench for this method. This is what professionals typically use anyway to get into your car. The good thing is that you can get into your vehicle without spending a bundle. The bad thing is that so can someone else. You might think twice about parking it on the questionable sidestreet now. Just be sure to wedge it in a spot where it won’t be easily found or fall off when driving. Get the lowdown here ! These low output, high maintenance charging systems can require a lot of attention throughout the years of ownership. Our classic cars do a lot of sitting. And every time you crank it up your pulling power out of the battery. Unfortunately, these low output systems will take a while to bring a battery back up to full charge. Generally speaking, the older the vehicle the longer it takes to recover. In fact, if you own a 1948 Cadillac fastback with the original flat head six, this car came with a generator instead of an alternator. If you own a 1970 Monte Carlo you’ll have a factory installed alternator. The generator supplies direct current while the alternator supplies alternating current. Obviously, the alternating current requires conversion to direct-current before it’s sent to the battery. This becomes the internal function of the rectifier bridge. Using a series of diodes it flattens out the alternating current signal and transforms it into direct-current. These older charging systems have internal components that eventually wear out. In this situation, drivers go out to their vehicle and find a no start condition at some point. Therefore, we’ll cover how to verify the alternator output is below specification. In addition, we’ll talk about the options we have to solve these charging system issues with or without a professional auto repair manual. Nevertheless, many of these car owners converted these antiquated classic car charging systems to use the more modern alternators. In fact, they still use this technology on cars and trucks today. With that said, the internal workings of a modern alternator look completely different than those from the 60s and 70s. This means you can replace the internal brushes, diodes and even the rectifier bridge that we discussed above. However, modern alternators include more transistors and solid-state components that aren’t serviceable. However, it really depends on how you view your classic car, how you use it and what you want to do with it in the future. The main reason for converting to an alternator remains the superior power output. Let me throw some numbers at you so you can see clearly, exactly how much more power we’re talking about. When the vehicle is idling the classic car charging system only puts out about 5 to 10 Amps. Classic car owners are familiar with this situation as their lights usually dim and turn brown when the vehicle is idling. As you increase the RPM the headlights increase in intensity. This boost the maximum output to about 70 A. But more importantly, even at idle, alternator output remains in the 40 to 50 amp range. Therefore, the benefits of converting from a generator to an alternator include faster battery recovery leading to a more reliable vehicle. It also eliminates the annoying problem of brown headlights at idle. However, car owners might notice a few other symptoms before they reach the no start situation. Often when the alternator starts to fail the power output becomes diminished. These alternators can make a whining or high-pitched noise as they struggle to maintain maximum power output. In addition, drivers might notice that power accessories seem to struggle. Sometimes, the interior blower motor won’t maintain the speed the driver is use to. Of course, symptoms of a failing alternator also include dim headlights that get brighter as the driver increases RPMs. There’s a simple way to test the battery and the charging system at the same time. The tool connects to the battery and reports on the alternator output in the battery’s ability to carry a load. An alternator is an item that comes apart. This means we can replace failed internal components. The caveat remains the availability of these replaceable parts. Drivers can lift the part number off of the alternator case and search for an alternator overhaul kit followed by that part number. Two other options remain for those in need of classic car charging system repair. Although this is the most expensive option, it remains the most efficient way to deal with the problem. New parts usually carry a one-year warranty compared to the 90 day warranty of a re-manufactured unit. Brand-new parts also have brand-new bearings and all other related moving parts. In a situation where you purchase a rebuilt alternator, you never know what you’re gonna get. In a few cases I’ve picked up a rebuilt alternator at the customer’s request. They were looking to save money on the charging system repairs, but the reliability of the rebuilt alternator disappointed them. These are the kind of folks that believe in keeping These are the kind of folks that believe in keeping a vintage automobile in original condition. Although I respect these people and their beliefs the act of keeping every nut and bolt issued from the factory isn’t right for everyone. As for me, I prefer to drive my automobile to the car show. Furthermore, I want to enjoy the ride and arrive at the auto show safely. In order to achieve these lofty goals some of the original parts on my personal classic car required an upgrade. Not only did I want to arrive at a car show safely, but when things wrapped up I wanted to get in and have it fire right up to take me home. Nothing ruins an amazing day like having to call a tow truck to drag your classic car back to home base. So let’s get into three classic car upgrades that make sense from a reliability and safety standpoint. From the factory the mighty Mopar came with a 45 amp alternator. These types of low output units make your headlights appear brown at idle. Although these muscle car era alternators remain a major upgrade over the generators installed in the early 1960s, they still leave a lot to be desired. Even if your late 60s or early 70s muscle car came from the factory with an alternator, you probably still have an external regulator. It wasn’t until the mid-1970s when vehicle manufacturers started moving the voltage control function inside the alternator case. When an externally mounted voltage regulator develops issues it can limit the voltage output. It can also fail in the opposite direction. In this situation the battery will overcharge. And overcharge scenario boils away the water and acid fluid covering the lead plates. Symptoms of voltage regulator problems include a consistently dead battery and headlights that appear dim at idle. In an overcharging situation you can often hear a gurgling from the battery. You can find more information about this subject from this great article about charging system diagnosis and repair. With that said, charging system upgrade kits abound for popular muscle cars like the Chevrolet Chevelle and Chevy Camaro. This can become a dangerous situation. When you’re driving behind a modern car you need to allow extra space because of their ability to stop in half the distance as you. In an emergency situation this may not be enough. A single reservoir master cylinder is often found on older cars that use four wheel drum brakes. This single chamber design uses one fluid reservoir to supply brake pressure to all four wheels. Obviously, if the fluid leaks out you lose braking at all four wheels. As the 60s rolled on, car makers faced increasingly strict safety standards. Therefore, these American car manufacturers improved brake designs by adding disc brakes to the front. This provided an opportunity to use a dual chamber master cylinder. The larger master cylinder chamber provides fluid for the front disc brake calipers. A dual chamber master cylinder allows the front and rear hydraulic braking systems to act independently of each other. Now, in the scenario of a hydraulic brake fluid leak on the front brakes, the driver can still use the rear brakes to slow the vehicle. And this is why a master cylinder upgrade makes my top 3 list of classic car upgrades. These cars didn’t stop well. However, at least all of the automobiles on the road at that time stopped in the same total distance. The invention of antilock braking systems cuts the stopping distance in half when compared to a vintage automobile. For this reason it’s recommended that classic car owners improve the braking system for regularly driven classic automobiles. This often requires the upgrade of the master cylinder as mentioned above. You can also add a vacuum operated power brake booster that multiplies the brake pedal pressure from the driver. Fortunately, this is one of those classic car upgrades that remain extremely popular. In fact, Entire businesses have grown to support disc brake conversion. Considering that this can save major damage to a significant investment and maybe even save a life, the money would seem well spent. This blanket statement doesn’t cover the This blanket statement doesn’t cover the whole truth about the subject. In fact, some regularly scheduled maintenance items are easier to replace on a 2004 Chevy Malibu than a 1972 Chevrolet Malibu. Last month the MotorEra.com website touched on this subject in an article covering the top five best car repair tips. Let’s take the 50,000 foot view from the tips article and bring it down to earth to focus on the easiest DIY auto repair. In fact, you’ll want to handle this particular service yourself from this day forward. Before we dig in, let me focus your attention to an article we put together explaining how to properly prepare for a DIY car repair. It contains insightful tips on how to get ready for success. Furthermore, you can get top quality parts to improve the safety of your automobile and perform the service in about 10 minutes. Yes, I’m talking about the replacement of the wiper blades. I know that it sounds like such an easy task that it shouldn’t even require an article. The biggest mistake people make is not doing it themselves. They let the auto repair shop do it instead. Don’t make this huge mistake. As a professional mechanic I can tell you that the shops I have worked for charge top dollar to replace the wiper blades for customers that are more than capable of doing it themselves. It goes beyond the cost of the service and the time restrictions of the busy motorist. Then they purchase these parts in bulk to save even more money. In addition, they marked these parts up 30 percent to maximize the profit. This means customers pay more than they should for parts that probably won’t even last a year. When those cheap, made in China, plastic wiper blades disintegrate in the middle of a rainstorm it can turn into an unsafe situation. High quality, metal framed, powder coated top-quality rubber wiper blades exist and you need to get a pair. Personally, I get my wiper blades from Michelin. That’s right, this tire company has a complete range of windshield wiper parts. Nobody makes better rubber than they do, in my opinion. Fortunately, they sell wiper blades directly to the consumer through big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target. Something else that the average consumer doesn’t realize becomes the design of the wiper blade. When you buy replacements from these top-of-the-line companies you get a built-in design that takes aerodynamics and consideration. That’s right; they use the wind at highway speeds to push the blade against the windshield. This provides superior clearing of the windshield that actually improves the faster you go. First of all, wiper blades are easier to install now than they were on automobiles from the 70s and 80s. Secondly, all you have to do is type the year, make and model of the vehicle into the YouTube search box with the words wiper blade. You’ll be amazed at the sheer number of high quality videos showing you exactly how to perform the service yourself. How long this rubber part survives depends a lot on environmental conditions. Another big factor becomes how the wiper blades are used and abused. The part of the rubber insert that touches the windshield is thin and delicate. If you use your blades to clean bird droppings off the windshield or ice and snow, they won’t even last a year. Why? You’ll get hairline cracks and fractures on the most important part of the rubber insert. And wiper blades that don’t properly clean the windshield become the number one complaint from drivers about this system. Another thing that remains high on the list of driver complaints when it comes to wiper blades becomes chattering. This horrible noise happens as the arms sweep back and forth. To understand how a worn or old blade can cause this condition let’s talk about how they operate when they’re new. As the rubber ages, it loses this flexibility. Now the arms are dragging them across the windshield and this can cause the annoying wiper blade chatter. Diagnosing your windshield wiper problem should start with replacing the blades. Especially, if they’re more than a year old. With that said, the possibility exists that a more complex issues exist.
