It is also dedicated to the memory of Bob Poskitt, my dear friend and mentor. He was my SPEC even before the term (and this ministry) existed. In 2007, at the time of this writing, Bob passed away and went on to be with the Lord. This book, as well as my others books, and this entire ministry are all the result of his godly influence in my life. Therefore, this ministry will forever by a living memorial to him and his passion to help the hurting. Acknowledgements This book is a companion to my previous two books, Doorway to H.O.P.E. and Names of H.O.P.E. There are many people who have contributed to these three books by providing me with much needed guidance and support. In my previous two books, and in the dedication for this book, I listed many of these influential people and I want to make it known that their contributions continue with this book. I also wish to thank my brother, Robert Grimm, and his wife Karen, for creating such a beautiful cover for the book. As with my previous books, they once again captured the look and message I wanted the book to portray. The contribution of their talents as graphic designers is a true blessing to me and the ministry. In addition, I want to thank the contributions of my small group members Eric Gregori and Michael Abella. I will always be grateful for their support, friendship and insight.http://www.elektroserviscz.cz/files/desigo-px-manual.xml This book is a direct result of the advice and feedback I received from them regarding my previous two books and H.O.P.E. in general. Finally, I wish to thank my brother, Wayne Grimm, and Jim Stewart for their editorial and conceptual reviews. Their feedback contributed greatly to the final compilation of this book. Chapter 1 Introduction Welcome If you are reading this book because you have decided to get involved with Help Overcoming Painful Experiences (H.O.P.E.) as a Spiritual and Emotional Coach (SPEC), let me first just say, Thank you. The contributions you make to the member you are helping, and to our ministry as a whole, could have such an enormous impact that it cannot be understated. Your valuable assistance can literally transform lives, which is what H.O.P.E. is all about. So welcome to H.O.P.E. and thank you for your much needed contribution to our ministry. Simply stated, the purpose of this book is to empower you for service as a SPEC. This book was written to help you maximize your effort and its effect. We want to help you be the best SPEC you can be, both for you and your member, so this book was designed to help you realize and tap into all the tools that are available to you in this role. In addition, this book was also designed to help familiarize you with our organization and what your member is going through. On the other hand, this book was not designed to tell you what to do. Our intent is not to try to create SPEC clones. We want you to utilize all the gifts and talents God has blessed you with as you help your member. But at the same time, we want all our SPECs to be prepared and fully armed for battle as they serve in this capacity. We want to do our part by providing you with the information we believe is important for helping you be successful and significant as a SPEC. To be clear, this book is a companion to, and an extension of, the two books used in our three-level ministry model, Doorway to H.O.P.E. (Level 1) and Names of H.O.P.E.http://eco-region31.ru/boss-hoss-owners-manual (Level 2). We highly recommend that you also get a copy of these two books to be fully prepared and informed of the lessons your member is learning in their small group. Unless specifically noted otherwise, all Scripture references are taken from the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible. Other versions cited include the New American Standard Version (NASV) and the New Living Translation (NLT). In addition, all pronouns that refer to God have been capitalized out of reverence, regardless of the translation used, and all Scriptures have been printed in italics. Our History I started H.O.P.E. in 2002 in response to God’s calling on my life to minister to those who are hurting. My passion in this area comes out of my own experiences with emotional pain and the desire to give back to others the Biblically based support and help I received. This support was largely provided by Bob Poskitt (my friend and SPEC), who was introduced to me at a very low time in my life when I was going through a divorce. By mirroring Jesus to me and other men in my situation, he wisely, diligently, truthfully and lovingly helped me overcome decades of emotional pain. H.O.P.E. began as an attempt to meet the needs of people who are living with painful experiences in my home church and in my community. Our name was chosen as an acrostic to reflect what we are all about, Help Overcoming Painful Experiences. When we started our first small groups, we used a commonly available support and recovery program. But this program was not the ministry model that I had in mind. More importantly, God made it very clear to me that it was not the ministry that He had in mind for me, either. Therefore, I searched for a different program. However, I could not find what I believed was the ministry model we were supposed to use.http://familymn.com/images/98-mazda-626-owners-manual.pdf One evening I commented to my wife about how surprised I was that in this day and age I could not find the type of program that fulfilled my search, to which she replied, That’s probably because you’re supposed to write it. That one simple statement changed everything (as the wisdom I receive from my wife often does). God had etched in my mind the need for a program in the format of a Bible study that focused on transforming lives by teaching God’s principles and purpose for pain, His character in the midst of pain and how to replace the lies that have held people hostage in their pain with the truth of His Word. But not only that, the Lord also showed me how to effectively utilize His Names (and so His character) in creating this type of a program. After seven months of writing, my two books, Doorway to H.O.P.E. and Names of H.O.P.E., were completed in 2005. At the same time, God impressed upon me His desire for us to expand our ministry and reach out to a hurting world. As a result, in 2005 our ministry incorporated in the state of Illinois as a non-profit organization, of which I am the CEO. My two books were published in 2006 and they are the focus of the three-level ministry model we created. Then in 2007, we received our federal 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. In 2006 God also called me to step down from my career as a research scientist and go into full time ministry, a transition that was completed in 2007. With this calling, God also provided me with a vision to transform our culture by reaching out beyond the walls of the church. When the statistics showing the overwhelming need for this ministry were combined with the statistics that showed a majority of the people in this country are no longer attending church, it became obvious that simply targeting churches with our ministry would never accomplish this vision. Not only did God provide us with the vision, but He also revealed to us the plan for accomplishing it (described in The Purpose of H.O.P.E. section). At the time of this writing, we were just beginning the process of implementing this plan. We were continuing to offer the program at our home church and two other local churches had recently started H.O.P.E. Beyond that, we did not have a clue as to where the people and resources needed for this vision would appear. However, we were fully persuaded that what God said would happen, would actually happen. And if you are reading this book, then there is evidence to show that we are in fact growing and God’s vision for us is happening. All the stories of how God transforms lives and provides for us along the way will become the subject of one of my future books. Our vision is to help people of all ages overcome painful experiences and transform their lives with our care, support, encouragement and the hope in Jesus Christ. (At the time of this writing, we were in the process of creating age appropriate versions of our adult program. The ultimate goal is to have additional programs for elementary, middle and high school students.) In essence, our purpose is to help people experience a life transformation through their trials and pain so they can go and grow beyond where they have ever been before. We are all about helping people stop embracing and fellowshipping with their emotional pain and start embracing and fellowshipping with Jesus Christ and the truth. We help people walk away from the lies and their bondage and walk into the purpose-filled, victorious life God designed for them to live. We purpose to start an emotional and spiritual revolution. Through God’s power, we are dedicated to restoring and transforming our culture and helping people stand up and start living the purpose-filled victorious life God designed them to live. We strive to go beyond a bandage for the symptoms to provide a cure for the disease. We want people to know that regardless of what they have been through, their past and their present are not the deciders of their future; Jesus Christ is. God’s principles and promises always apply and He can use our pain to bring about miraculous changes in us and through us. The fact is that God is in the business of change and out of our greatest pain can come our greatest ministry. Our goal is to help people everywhere fully experience these principles in their own lives. The plan to accomplish our mission and vision includes a two-fold approach. The first is to develop H.O.P.E. Centers across the country and ultimately throughout the world. H.O.P.E. Centers would not only reproduce our ministry model, but would also provide additional programs and services designed to meet the specific needs in a given community. For example, our H.O.P.E. Centers might also provide after school programs, leadership training, career and life skills training, meals, clothing, practical assistance (such as home or car repairs, transportation, etc.), church services and on and on. Whatever the needs in the community, the H.O.P.E. Center would seek to provide for them. The second is to develop affiliated locations by implementing our program in existing locations. In addition to churches, examples of affiliated locations include businesses, prisons, health centers, rehabilitation centers, schools, etc. Regardless of the location, H.O.P.E would provide the materials, training and support needed to successfully reproduce our program. The H.O.P.E. Program Before briefly explaining what our program is, I would like to explain what our program is not. We are not counseling, we are not a 12 Step Program and we are not a recovery group, either. To us, the term recovery implies that a person has returned to the point where they were prior to experiencing their trials and pain. Since our purpose is to help people experience a life transformation through their trials and pain so they can go and grow beyond where they have ever been before, we focus on transformation, not recovery. Therefore, we developed a small group based, three-level model of transformation. Our three levels are intended to help people experience a life transformation through the power of Jesus Christ, develop long-term spiritual growth and put into practice what they have learned in a way where they will go out and impact the world for Jesus Christ. This structure arose from our belief that emotional issues result from underlying spiritual needs. So by addressing the spiritual needs you can successfully enable transformation that produces emotional wholeness and healing. In this way, we believe we are appropriately addressing the disease and not just the symptoms. The program used in this model was written in the format of a Bible study that clearly and systematically teaches the truth about God’s purpose and principles regarding pain and suffering, God’s character in the midst of pain and about all the lies that have held people hostage in their pain. As Jesus said in John 8:32, You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free (NASV). We show truth into difficult situations and how changing our thought pattern to one like God’s can free us and transform our attitudes, behaviors and understanding of God during painful times in life. As the Bible says in Romans 12:2, And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect (NASV). Through our program, we also help people get to know the Lord more personally by developing a closer (or new) relationship with Him, growing in wisdom and knowledge of the truth, allowing Christ to mold their character through their pain and ultimately living a transformed life. Our program not only teaches people God’s principles for overcoming their pain, but also how to stop living a defeated life and start living the purpose-filled, victorious life God intended them to live. Our program and model are also a reflection of our belief that God’s process of transformation takes time. We need to allow God to work His process in and through us in His own time and according to His unique plan for us. We must, by a conscious act of our will, commit to accept His plan for us. It is up to us to be moldable, teachable and willing to receive what He offers us. We must be sold out to trusting in Him by being obedient, and one critically important area of obedience is to study, learn and heed God’s Word. In order for transformation to occur, we must be firmly rooted in God’s Word and establish it in our lives. If we do, the power of His Word will fulfill its purpose for us and we can fully experience transformation. We believe the principles we teach are lacking today and as a result, people are not well enough equipped to handle hard times in life. Regardless of the person, issue or location, God’s Word and principles still apply and provide the only real answers. That is why we have such a broad target that includes people struggling with things like relationship issues (such as divorce and broken homes), the build up of harmful emotions, depression, anxiety, abuse, illness, loss (loved ones, finances, hopes and dreams), addictions, living a life without purpose and meaning and more. In fact, since all of us have gone (or will go) through painful experiences, we believe that this program would be good for anyone in any Bible study setting. We believe that everyone needs to understand that God has a plan for all the pain they go through. More specifically about our program, small groups in all three levels are designed to meet once a week and last for one and a half hours. Half the time is spent going through the lesson for that week and half the time is spent Checking In. Checking In is a time for each member to share what’s been happening to them the previous week and how they feel about these events, how they’re benefiting from the lessons and the group in general, and provide feedback on the previous lesson’s Acting on the Truth section (their homework). Checking In is done according to the H.O.P.E. Guidelines ( Appendix A ). Each level of our model was designed for a specific purpose. The following section provides a brief summary of each level: Level 1: This is the entry point into our ministry. This level is always open for new members, so it allows us to have a group that someone can join on any given day. This level uses the Doorway to H.O.P.E. book and is designed to be team-taught in a classroom style setting. Following the lesson, group members divide into smaller groups to allow for Checking In. Each smaller group has a group leader from the ministry. The 12 lessons in Doorway to H.O.P.E. were written to show how we all have a deep emotional and spiritual need that only God can fill. In order to begin the process of transformation, we first have to recognize that we have this need. Therefore, this book was designed around Matthew 5:3 which says, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. However, for our purpose, this verse was translated as, Happy are those who recognize their need for God. In exposing the deep emotional and spiritual need we all have for God, the lessons in Doorway to H.O.P.E. focus on the Three Truths About Life. In presenting these truths, the lessons draw out the encouragement that can be gleaned from them. In addition, the lessons are also designed to resurrect hope, wet appetites for starting the process of transformation, tear down barriers to beginning the process of transformation (by showing that this is a safe place to find the help and support needed), and funnel members coming from diverse emotional and spiritual backgrounds to a more common place that includes: 1. A serious desire for transformation. 2. An openness to learn God’s principles and truth. 3. A willingness to investigate His plan for their pain and future. But these lessons and this level are not only about providing our members with the truth; this level (and our entire ministry) is also about supporting and encouraging them throughout the entire process of transformation. Therefore, we walk with them through their pain. We help them establish and develop a support network that can further strengthen and encourage them. We help them move away from their previous unhealthy community into a new one that is both healthy and Biblically based. Because this process is so important, it continues in all levels of our ministry. After completing this level, our members can then take action to continue their journey through the process of transformation by entering into a Level 2 small group. This is the ultimate goal of Level 1, to populate our Level 2 groups with members who are serious about experiencing a transformed life. In essence, everything in Level 1 is designed with this goal in mind. Level 2: Level 2 is our meat and potatoes. Having Names of H.O.P.E. small groups populated with members who are committed to experiencing a transformed life is the backbone of our model. In contrast to the open classroom style of Level 1, Level 2 uses closed small groups of no more than 6-8 people (with a group leader and a co-leader) who have completed the Level 1 Doorway to H.O.P.E. group. We create these small groups with members who have become comfortable with one another during Level 1 Checking In. This structure enables these members to go through the entire level together and keeps the dynamics of the group more consistent. To accomplish our purpose, the H.O.P.E. program was designed to help people 1) resurrect hope, 2) overcome emotional pain from a variety of issues, 3) build a safe and healthy support network, 4) comprehend the truths about God in the midst of pain while exposing and replacing lies, and 5) experience a life transformation through the healing and restorative power of Jesus Christ. Our transformation model consists of three levels. SPECs allow us to extend our ministry by providing additional support for our members through a one-on-one mentoring relationship outside their small group. Our members need a contractor (SPEC) who can coach them using their own experiences with the spiritual and emotional rebuilding process. Therefore, this book was designed to empower and equip our SPECs by helping them realize and tap into the knowledge and tools available to them in this role. This book also contains a topical Scripture reference guide for convenient access to verses that can be applied to a variety of issues. In addition, this book was designed to help familiarize SPECs with our organization and what their member is going through. Our mission is to provide a safe place to work through the emotional issues that hinder us from fully embracing God, others and life with enthusiasm. Our vision is to help people of all ages overcome their emotional pain and go on to experience a life transformation through our care, support, encouragement and the hope in Jesus Christ. Ultimately, our purpose is to set people free from their emotional bondage so they can live the fulfilled, victorious life God intended and designed them to live. To accomplish our mission, vision and purpose, we developed a small group based, three level model of transformation. During our program (which consists of two books, Doorway to H.O.P.E. and Names of H.O.P.E.), our members are paired with a Spiritual and Emotional Coach (SPEC). The Spiritual and Emotional Coach's Guide was written to prepare and empower our SPECs for service by providing them with the information and tools necessary to have a life changing impact in this crucial role.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
