I generally like LP books (used to like?) but after this I wondered how much misinformation I must have read about places I don't know anything about. Hence TA, which tends to be up-to-date. Public transport details are more reliable, to be fair. When we went to Valencia, all of the restaurants they mentioned were rubbish. Shortly after my wife met a travel writer, who told her that he submits stuff to the press, but it may be a year before it is used, when it may be out of date. I spend all my time out exploring when I'm traveling so all I need is a bed to fall into when I'm too tired to move. Be aware of when your passport will expire. Many countries require validity of 6 months and some countries require you to have blank pages. 2. Take Cover. Some countries now require proof of health insurance coverage before granted entry. 3. Plan to have rest days in your itinerary so you can unwind and recharge. You do not want to burn yourself out on holidays. 4. Pack healthy snacks for your flights and stay hydrated. 5. On arrival after a long haul flight go for a jog, a brisk walk or swim, to get your blood circulating and help with adjusting to local time. 6. Stay fit on your travels. Note too that some vaccinations might not work in some destinations. (e.g. high altitudes) 9. Carry all prescriptions and over the counter medicines in their original containers. 10. Carry a copy of prescriptions in case your important medication is lost. 11. Always carry Imodium in your carry on gear (it is usually sold at airports). 12. Visit your dentist before you leave. 13. If you wear glasses take a spare pair. 14. If you have a hearing aid take extra batteries as they will possibly be hard to find. 15. Ask a local. Your hotel concierge can be good, but the friendly waitress at the local coffee shop or juice bar could be better 16. Alert your credit card providers as to when, where and how long you will be travelling. 17. If travelling with a companion, swap extra credit cards. If you lose your wallet your companion will have your back up card. It is also a good idea to divvy up your travel cash and credit cards into multiple safe spots. 18. Before you leave, go through your wallet and take out everything except the necessities for your trip. 19. Have a record of your passport details that can easily be accessed in the case of loss. 20. Understand your insurance coverage for: loss of items cancellation of booked travel arrangements illness or accident while traveling 21. Make sure you know who to contact and how to make insurance claims to avoid any extra stress. 22. Suitcases with four wheels will definitely be appreciated. 23. Turn your data roaming off on your cell. 24. When travelling outside of North America you will probably need an electricity converter, and often a voltage adaptor. A double head converter is useful for multichargers. 25. A plastic poncho could be very useful as might superglue and a Swiss Army style knife (in your checked luggage) 26. When renting a motorcycle make sure you wear a helmet even though the locals don't 27. Always check your bags every time they are loaded in vehicles, airports, hotels, etc. Mistakes and mischief can happen 28. As soon as you have settled into your hotel room, check out where the nearest exits are in case of fire and mentally plan your escape 29. Housekeepers don't always check alarm clocks in rooms, you should. You should use it to wake up for early flights as hotel staff don't always get it right 30. When impressed with the glitter of duty free shops try to remember their rent is high. Knowing the price at home of the items you want to buy helps 31. When arriving at a hotel early in the morning and your room might not be ready it helps if the hotel has a pool, spa or business floor where you can relax 32. Plastic and zip lock bags are very useful. (i.e. dirty clothes) 33. Bring some small packets of laundry detergent. Socks and underwear washed in the hotel bathroom dry quicker when rolled into a towel like a sausage 34. Compression stockings are supposed to combat deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) on long distance flights. Medical experts recommend a walk and a stretch as often as possible, drink lots of water and avoid alcohol. Some doctors also recommend aspirin. 35. Before each flight make sure you remove from your luggage old tags and barcode stickers and check you have contact details on both, the outside and inside of your luggage 36. Smart suitcase packers bring clothes in neutral colours that can mix and match and only pack shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits 37. You may only carry liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in your hand luggage in containers that have a maximum capacity of 100ml each, all packed in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag, capacity of the bag must not exceed one litre 38. To avoid baggage fees, be aware of restrictions on the weight, size and number of bags you may take 39. Take along a change of clothes in your carry on in the event your luggage gets delayed 40. Always pack a smart outfit. You never know when you will need it 41. Use several “bright” labels for your check-in luggage so you can quickly identify them at the carousel 42. Visiting local pubs and farmers markets give you an insider's view of the people and region you are visiting. Food is a big part of the travel experience so it is a must to try local delicacies 43. Get fit before you travel. The fitter you are the more fun you will have on your trip 44. When travelling don't stress too much as everything will probably work out in the end. Sticky situations can often work out to be a highlight of your trip 45. If you are concerned about your hotel room security, hang the “do not disturb” sign on the door when you leave 46. To avoid scams, be alert for distractions such as thieves who pose as willing and helpful locals. E.g. dropping a bag of shopping, being asked to complete a survey, even bird poo on the back of your jacket 47. If you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel. Young travellers are well known for not taking out adequate insurance 48. On cruises, purchase optional shore excursions before boarding the ship. Doing so will help you avoid long lines and allow you to disembark earlier than those purchasing excursions at the last minute 49. Be careful choosing to take along an irreplaceable jewel or memento 50. You should carry sanitizing wipes. They are very useful for T.V. remotes and phones which are the biggest carriers of bacteria in a hotel guestroom 51. Make sure you pack comfortable walking shoes 52. A small bottle of hand sanitizer can be very useful in some countries where it is sometimes hard to find a bathroom with soap and water 53. It is good to know the tipping culture of countries you are visiting. Always carry small change to cover tips 56. Make sure your carry-on luggage is suitably tagged with correct contact addresses 57. An extra carry bag (suitably tagged) could be useful 58. To speed up the security process at airports and avoid losing things put as much loose gear (e.g. camera) in your carry on. It is possible to get distracted and forget loose items 59. In some countries you can be detained for photographing such things as police and government buildings. When in doubt ask for permission 60. If you wear contact lenses, bring glasses for the airplane. The recycled air could dry out your eyes and make you uncomfortable 61. Buying foreign currency at the airport can be expensive. Travelex offers online purchase of most currencies with pickup and delivery (for a fee) options. At destination most countries allow you to withdraw local currency from ATM's using your bank card 62. In some countries US dollars are an official or unofficial secondary currency so it is wise to keep a few greenbacks at the ready (small denomination and good condition) 63. Store important travel documents, including itineraries, airline tickets, passport copies and insurance details, in an online cloud storage system such as Dropbox or Google Drive, so you can access them on all your devices or even from a computer at a hotel. An alternative of course is to photocopy them 64. Take a travel journal. It is a great way to track your trip and a handy place to keep phone numbers and email addresses of people you meet along the way (great too for reading years later) 65. Before travelling, ask your bank if they recommend using a certain bank's ATM at your destination. When travelling abroad you may be able to withdraw cash with your bank card or take a cash advance from your credit card and pay no surcharges or access fees by using a certain bank's machines 66. Don't fly straight to altitude and begin strenuous activities on day 1. Plan a few days of easy activities to help acclimatize As we would like to add to this list we invite you to review and submit relevant tips you feel will be helpful to fellow international travellers. Here’s what you can do. Dec 3, 2020 Advertisement. Local operators in the industry must implement sustainable best practices within their business if they are to succeed in attracting the European market. To enter the European market for ocean and river cruises, local operators must consider safety and sustainability to be the most important factors for their business. The cruise industry is growing and, as a result, there are numerous opportunities for local operators to provide shore excursions to ships, shore excursion agents or directly to passengers. It was one of the first sectors to be severely impacted, and there was much negative publicity as many thousands of passengers and crew were stranded on infected ships around the world. Consequently, the industry has suffered from considerable reputational damage, and there is much work to be done to rebuild trust among consumers. CLIA’s Cruise Industry COVID-19 Facts and Resources is another important resource for you to study and was updated in mid-August 2020. Ships have introduced a wide range of strict new protocols to help regain consumer confidence. Some of these measures (not all implemented by every cruise line) include: Hurtigruten suffered a major outbreak of COVID-19 on one of its ships in August 2020 and has cancelled all further sailings until 2021. Other major cruise lines appear to be following suit including Crystal and Princess Cruises. Germany and other European nations have issued similar advice. However, in the UK this advice was further updated and clarified in mid-July to enable British nationals to take domestic river cruises on account of shorter itineraries and fewer passengers. Similarly, in the European Union (EU), nationals have been cleared to take domestic river cruises assuming specific hygiene measures are in place. This article, When will cruise ships start sailing again, profiles a wide range of cruise lines and their sailing plans for 2020 and 2021. Bookings for 2021 are reported to be higher than those in 2019. Safety is the industry’s top priority and cruise ships are subject to a comprehensive system of regulation, enforcement and inspection, which protects passengers, crew and the environment. Vessels are subject to several announced and unannounced safety inspections every year and there are thousands of specific requirements that have been established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and other organisations. Many ships go substantially above and beyond what is required by international law. It conducts and publishes numerous research studies, which you may find useful. While the regulations do not generally apply to domestic passenger ships, such as pleasure cruisers or passenger ferries, many countries base their regulations on the IMO standards. Ensuring safety at sea involves the following. Safety drills in multiple languages prior to departure. In the past, the industry has suffered from a negative reputation over issues such as pollution, plastic waste and overtourism. Today, the cruise industry is investing heavily in environmental stewardship to increase its appeal to a new generation of cruisers demanding more sustainable travel options. In 2020, CLIA reasserted its pledge to reduce the rate of carbon emissions across its industry fleet by 40 by 2030. The industry is also exploring other fuel alternatives, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cells. Hurtigruten launched the world’s first hybrid electric-powered expedition ships, MS Roald Amundsen in 2019 and sister ship MS Fridtjof Nansen in 2020, which use large banks of batteries to supplement engines that use low sulfur marine gas oil. A third, similarly powered Hurtigruten vessels is under construction, due to launch in 2021. French operator Ponant’s new hybrid electric-powered icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot, powered by batteries and LNG, is also due to enter service in 2021, when it makes its inaugural trip to the Arctic. Other energy-saving initiatives include the use of LED lights and more efficient appliances, recycling hot water in cabins and reusing water within engine cooling and air conditioning systems. Some cruise ships now repurpose all their waste on board by reducing, reusing, donating, recycling and converting waste into energy. Read what initiatives the Motor Yacht Tucano has adopted to establish sustainable river cruise travel on the Amazon River in Brazil. This involves a cruise terminal or other docking facility. Docks need to be of sufficient length and the water of sufficient depth to accommodate the size of incoming vessels. If larger ships are unable to land, ships will dock offshore and tenders are used to transport passengers to shore. Tenders are more typical in more remote destinations or on islands where cruise infrastructure is more limited. Find out more about the difference between docks and tenders in Cruise Critic’s, Docks vs Tenders: Two Ways to Get Ashore. Research on the decision criteria for cruise passengers in the North Sea Region in northern Europe provides some useful information that can be applied across the cruise industry. While safety and security emerge as an essential factor, the attractiveness of the destination, its reputation and availability and quality of tourist activities will all have an impact on whether cruise passengers will join your cruise. You should make sure to consider the following. It is essential that all boats conform with the applicable safety laws in your destination and have a supply of lifejackets that exceeds the number of passengers and crew on board. To begin with, make sure you know what the local regulations are by contacting your local Port Authority. When they disembark, be clear about what they can do and how long the stop is for. Check that signage in the area is clear. If it could be improved, consult the relevant authorities to see if there are plans in place to improve the signage, or press for improvements to be implemented. If you will be serving meals on board, there should be adequate and clean kitchen and serving facilities. They must be fully trained in all safety procedures. This could be food and drink, memorabilia, clothing or equipment. They are usually sold to the passenger by the cruise line, or passengers can purchase an excursion from the tour operator either directly or via an agent. These are the steps you should take when selecting suitable suppliers. Find out more about Excursion Insurance here. You could offer a city tour if the cruise is a cultural tour, or a visit to an animal sanctuary if your cruises have a family audience. If the cruise is an expedition vessel, perhaps you could consider an adventure activity, like a cycling tour. Make sure you are transparent about the prices and that there are no hidden extras. Again, you can find out more about setting prices in the CBI’s Tips for Doing Business with European tourism buyers. Global growth in 2020 was expected to reach 32 million passengers, up from 30 million in 2019, according to CLIA. You can read more about the size of the cruise market in Europe in the European market potential for Cruise Tourism Study. The segments of most interest to local cruise operators in developing countries are those in the Excursion and Day Trip Market, and the Budget Segment. High crew-to-passenger ratio The main routes to sell products to cruise customers are shown in the chart below. Customers who book directly with the cruise line are more likely to be repeat customers. The major cruise lines include Carnival and Royal Caribbean, two of the world’s largest cruise lines; Silversea and Seabourn, specialising in luxury cruises; and CroisiEurope and Viking River Cruises, specialising in river cruises. It is a highly competitive market and most have a strong online presence. Some travel agents also have high street shops. For potential customers, the benefit of using a traditional travel agent is that they can offer specialised advice and are able to negotiate deals and promotions that customers may not know about. Leading German travel company TUI has a strong presence throughout Europe, and its cruise division is branded Mein Schiff in Germany, Marella Cruises in the UK, and TUI in the Netherlands. Kuoni is another leading European travel company, part of the German DER Touristik Group. Examples include Kreuzfahrten, E-hoi and Astoria Kreuzfahrten Zentrale in Germany, and in the UK, Cruise Direct, Iglu Cruise, Cruise 1 st and Planet Cruise. Expedia, Priceline, and Tripadvisor are examples of aggregator websites, and each has a cruise tab on its website. An example is Shore Excursion (a subsidiary of specialist cruise agent, Cruise Compete) and Cruising Excursions. In Europe, specialist German operators include Kreuzfahrtausfluege and Seereiseplanung Kreuzfahrten. Analysing the busiest cruise ports in developing countries is a useful starting point to identify competing destinations for local cruises and boat trips.
