Although this upgrade remains popular, because of the noise a tuned exhaust header creates, there is actually a scientific reason to go for this aftermarket upgrade.http://ebrinteractive.com/userfiles/dnastar-seqman-manual.xml

If we relate both of these upgrades to how an athlete performs we can better understand why we’ll see a big boost in horsepower. The intake manifold represents the inhalation of oxygen for a human being. The exhaust manifold represents the exhale, but more importantly, the ability to expel all of the air from the lungs. This allows us to take in the maximum amount of oxygen on the next inhale. Imperfections in the casting slowed down the intake of air and fuel. In the same way the sharp bends and rough inside castings of a standard exhaust manifold reduce the flow of exhaust. If we only increase the ability for the intake to pull in more air and fuel, without increasing flow on the exhaust side we don’t reap all of the benefits. So let’s talk about a few reasons to upgrade the exhaust headers. On a classic muscle car era automobile you’ll find a compact part with 90 turns and ports that share the task of removing exhaust fumes from multiple cylinders. These exhaust manifolds are so inefficient that it actually creates back pressure in the combustion chamber. In other words, exhaust gases don’t flow out fast enough to empty the cylinder. In turn, this restriction of exhaust flow robs the engine of generating its full ability to produce horsepower and torque. When using an aftermarket exhaust header you find dedicated tubes for each cylinder. In addition, you find that the surfaces inside are highly polished. Instead the exhaust takes a long flowing turn that enhances the ability to remove exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. This improves the volumetric efficiency of the engine. Therefore, we can say high-performance exhaust headers provide enhanced efficiency, because of the large diameter tubing, long flowing bends and polished inside surfaces to reduce drag and back pressure. The factory installed these compact manifolds because they didn’t have the room in the engine compartment.http://www.frankenfoto.de/userfiles/dnc65-dehumidifier-manual.xml With that said, they also didn’t see it as the best way to increase horsepower at the time. Nevertheless, installing aftermarket headers on some classic muscle cars presents major challenges. I installed a pair of Lakewood performance exhaust headers on a friend’s Dodge Charger RT. Long story short, the header installation on the big block 440 cubic inch engine became a nightmare. We purchased model specific parts from a reputable Mopar specialist that designed the headers specifically for the Dodge Charger application. In addition, interference with the upper control arms and the tie rods became another issue. After we completed the installation the true problems began to surface. In order to clear some suspension parts the driver side header becomes the lowest part under the automobile. After going over a few speed bumps the tubes that carried exhaust gases from the front cylinders became completely smashed closed. Instead of increasing efficiency the end result became exactly the opposite. In fact, you can even find an article about nitrous oxide upgrades you can put in the trunk to provide the boost you’re looking for. But no matter where we decide to boost performance, deciding to upgrade the exhaust headers maximizes the benefits of all the other alterations. I’m talking about cars like the Chevrolet Malibu Super Sport and the Ford Mustang pony cars. These automobiles utilized some of the most inefficient exhaust manifolds ever created by man. It’s not that the original designers of these engines did not understand volumetric efficiency, they just approached the horsepower wars in a different way. They decided to increase combustion ratios and cubic inches to achieve the desired performance level. Of course, they also had leaded fuel available to them at the time. This forced them in the direction of improving the intake and exhaust cycles on modern automobiles.http://ninethreefox.com/?q=node/14868 Therefore, the general rule of thumb becomes the newer the automobile the less performance gains you’ll find from upgrading the intake and exhaust manifolds. Why? It’s because the automotive manufacturers upgrade the exhaust headers on their own. They also do a good job on the intake side of manufacturing efficient cold air intakes and intake plenums installed on the assembly line. These are the kind of folks that believe in keeping These are the kind of folks that believe in keeping a vintage automobile in original condition. Although I respect these people and their beliefs the act of keeping every nut and bolt issued from the factory isn’t right for everyone. As for me, I prefer to drive my automobile to the car show. Furthermore, I want to enjoy the ride and arrive at the auto show safely. In order to achieve these lofty goals some of the original parts on my personal classic car required an upgrade. Not only did I want to arrive at a car show safely, but when things wrapped up I wanted to get in and have it fire right up to take me home. Nothing ruins an amazing day like having to call a tow truck to drag your classic car back to home base. So let’s get into three classic car upgrades that make sense from a reliability and safety standpoint. From the factory the mighty Mopar came with a 45 amp alternator. These types of low output units make your headlights appear brown at idle. Although these muscle car era alternators remain a major upgrade over the generators installed in the early 1960s, they still leave a lot to be desired. Even if your late 60s or early 70s muscle car came from the factory with an alternator, you probably still have an external regulator. It wasn’t until the mid-1970s when vehicle manufacturers started moving the voltage control function inside the alternator case. When an externally mounted voltage regulator develops issues it can limit the voltage output. It can also fail in the opposite direction.http://gerryikputuandpartners.com/images/compost-facility-operator-manual-pdf.pdf In this situation the battery will overcharge. And overcharge scenario boils away the water and acid fluid covering the lead plates. Symptoms of voltage regulator problems include a consistently dead battery and headlights that appear dim at idle. In an overcharging situation you can often hear a gurgling from the battery. You can find more information about this subject from this great article about charging system diagnosis and repair. With that said, charging system upgrade kits abound for popular muscle cars like the Chevrolet Chevelle and Chevy Camaro. This can become a dangerous situation. When you’re driving behind a modern car you need to allow extra space because of their ability to stop in half the distance as you. In an emergency situation this may not be enough. A single reservoir master cylinder is often found on older cars that use four wheel drum brakes. This single chamber design uses one fluid reservoir to supply brake pressure to all four wheels. Obviously, if the fluid leaks out you lose braking at all four wheels. As the 60s rolled on, car makers faced increasingly strict safety standards. Therefore, these American car manufacturers improved brake designs by adding disc brakes to the front. This provided an opportunity to use a dual chamber master cylinder. The larger master cylinder chamber provides fluid for the front disc brake calipers. A dual chamber master cylinder allows the front and rear hydraulic braking systems to act independently of each other. Now, in the scenario of a hydraulic brake fluid leak on the front brakes, the driver can still use the rear brakes to slow the vehicle. And this is why a master cylinder upgrade makes my top 3 list of classic car upgrades. These cars didn’t stop well. However, at least all of the automobiles on the road at that time stopped in the same total distance. The invention of antilock braking systems cuts the stopping distance in half when compared to a vintage automobile. For this reason it’s recommended that classic car owners improve the braking system for regularly driven classic automobiles. This often requires the upgrade of the master cylinder as mentioned above. You can also add a vacuum operated power brake booster that multiplies the brake pedal pressure from the driver. Fortunately, this is one of those classic car upgrades that remain extremely popular. In fact, Entire businesses have grown to support disc brake conversion. Considering that this can save major damage to a significant investment and maybe even save a life, the money would seem well spent. Once you have done your car research and found the perfect one for you, it’s time to choose when you will step into a dealership. This is the end of the year, and dealerships have sales quotas to meet and exceed. If they exceed their goals by a certain amount, the dealership might get a nice bonus check, and therefore they want to get you into a new car. This puts you right at the end of meeting sales quotas. Salespeople, sales managers, and dealership owners are all working together to end the year with a bang with it comes to their numbers. The best day to get the lowest car price is the last day of the year. Yes, December 31st can mean saving a couple of thousand of dollars. Going into a dealership right at the end of the quarter is another great savings day. The average person goes car shopping during the weekend because it is normally the days they have off. Very few people go into a dealership on a Monday because it is the start of their workweek. If you can’t go in on a Monday, then Thursday is another good option. If not then Wednesday is third in line, then Friday, then Tuesday. Many people think that weekends are the best because they see so many people at the dealership, but the truth is your power to negotiate lessens because they have people there ready to buy. The last thing you want is to invest your hard-earned money into a vehicle that is not reliable and breaks down on you. Nothing worse than knowing you owe way more than your car is worth because no one wants a piece of junk. You want to make sure you set yourself up with a realistic budget when it comes to your car payment. You do not want to put yourself in a situation where you can’t repay your car loan. You have to take into account budgeting money for full liability insurance if you are financing, plus annual registration renewals, oil changes, new brake pads, and don’t forget gas. If you live in a state that requires vehicle inspections, then you will have to add that into the budget as well. They say knowledge is power, and in this case, knowledge will save you money. Make sure you show up with your negotiating hat on and make your car salesman a reasonable offer that they can’t resist. These low output, high maintenance charging systems can require a lot of attention throughout the years of ownership. Our classic cars do a lot of sitting. And every time you crank it up your pulling power out of the battery. Unfortunately, these low output systems will take a while to bring a battery back up to full charge. Generally speaking, the older the vehicle the longer it takes to recover. In fact, if you own a 1948 Cadillac fastback with the original flat head six, this car came with a generator instead of an alternator. If you own a 1970 Monte Carlo you’ll have a factory installed alternator. The generator supplies direct current while the alternator supplies alternating current. Obviously, the alternating current requires conversion to direct-current before it’s sent to the battery. This becomes the internal function of the rectifier bridge. Using a series of diodes it flattens out the alternating current signal and transforms it into direct-current. These older charging systems have internal components that eventually wear out. In this situation, drivers go out to their vehicle and find a no start condition at some point. Therefore, we’ll cover how to verify the alternator output is below specification. In addition, we’ll talk about the options we have to solve these charging system issues with or without a professional auto repair manual. Nevertheless, many of these car owners converted these antiquated classic car charging systems to use the more modern alternators. In fact, they still use this technology on cars and trucks today. With that said, the internal workings of a modern alternator look completely different than those from the 60s and 70s. This means you can replace the internal brushes, diodes and even the rectifier bridge that we discussed above. However, modern alternators include more transistors and solid-state components that aren’t serviceable. However, it really depends on how you view your classic car, how you use it and what you want to do with it in the future. The main reason for converting to an alternator remains the superior power output. Let me throw some numbers at you so you can see clearly, exactly how much more power we’re talking about. When the vehicle is idling the classic car charging system only puts out about 5 to 10 Amps. Classic car owners are familiar with this situation as their lights usually dim and turn brown when the vehicle is idling. As you increase the RPM the headlights increase in intensity. This boost the maximum output to about 70 A. But more importantly, even at idle, alternator output remains in the 40 to 50 amp range. Therefore, the benefits of converting from a generator to an alternator include faster battery recovery leading to a more reliable vehicle. It also eliminates the annoying problem of brown headlights at idle. However, car owners might notice a few other symptoms before they reach the no start situation. Often when the alternator starts to fail the power output becomes diminished. These alternators can make a whining or high-pitched noise as they struggle to maintain maximum power output. In addition, drivers might notice that power accessories seem to struggle. Sometimes, the interior blower motor won’t maintain the speed the driver is use to. Of course, symptoms of a failing alternator also include dim headlights that get brighter as the driver increases RPMs. There’s a simple way to test the battery and the charging system at the same time. The tool connects to the battery and reports on the alternator output in the battery’s ability to carry a load. An alternator is an item that comes apart. This means we can replace failed internal components. The caveat remains the availability of these replaceable parts. Drivers can lift the part number off of the alternator case and search for an alternator overhaul kit followed by that part number. Two other options remain for those in need of classic car charging system repair. Although this is the most expensive option, it remains the most efficient way to deal with the problem. New parts usually carry a one-year warranty compared to the 90 day warranty of a re-manufactured unit. Brand-new parts also have brand-new bearings and all other related moving parts. In a situation where you purchase a rebuilt alternator, you never know what you’re gonna get. In a few cases I’ve picked up a rebuilt alternator at the customer’s request. They were looking to save money on the charging system repairs, but the reliability of the rebuilt alternator disappointed them. Not only will we cover troublesome components, but we’ll talk about the operation of the warning light and how drivers can often mistake normal operation as a perceived problem. Before we start to review common ABS system problems let’s talk about why car manufacturers developed this technology. In addition let’s talk about what it means when the warning light comes on and what we should do about it. If a tire locks up it loses the ability to properly control the vehicle. The ABS system quickly applies and releases the brake on any wheels that show a lockup situation. In the old days they told us to pump the brake pedal on icy roads. Now the driver can just push as hard as they want on the brake pedal and the ABS system accomplishes the same task automatically. They often mount these wheel speed sensors on a backing plate. Although this plate provides some protection the sensor remains exposed to the harsh elements, road salt and flying debris. If the sensor becomes damaged the computer turns on the ABS warning light to notify the driver that the system isn’t functioning properly. These trouble codes can point you in the direction of the malfunction. This greatly reduces diagnostic time and removes the guesswork so you’re not replacing unneeded parts. In other words, if a wheel speed sensor gets crushed by road debris the brake module sets a trouble code for this sensor. After you replace the damaged wheel speed sensor the car’s computer automatically sees the completed repairs after a short drive. The light goes out and it’s not necessary to clear any set trouble codes. Again that’s why they call it a constantly monitored system. If a wheel speed sensor fails, parts and labor to replace this item run around hundred dollars on many cars. However, some aging ABS systems are known for modulator valve problems. This part of the system controls and allows hydraulic fluid to flow to individual calipers. Many manufacturers built these modulator valves into an assembly that contains the EBCM (electronic brake control module). Now when one part of this assembly fails, you need to replace all of it.These units manufactured by Kelsey Hayes failed in large numbers. Aftermarket companies jumped in to take advantage of this business opportunity. They rebuild or repair your original component and send it back to you. Therefore, a little research on your individual problem might uncover cost-effective solutions. In other words, drivers can go for long periods of time without needing to use a panic stop function. Then when an emergency occurs, these drivers can hear and feel harsh engagement of the antilock safety feature for the first time. Mechanics highly recommend that car owners become familiar with how this safety feature performs when everything is working correctly. In fact, dealers that sell you an ABS equipped vehicle should demonstrate how it operates. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. Get use to judging the total stopping distance from different speeds and road surface conditions. Taking the time to do this remains a better solution than being surprised by the first panic stop in an emergency situation. This prevents drivers from complaining about common ABS system problems that actually indicate normal operation. Things like the violent push-back from the brake pedal, a buzzing or grinding noise when the system becomes active indicates proper function on many models. A prime example of this is the traction control system. When a wheel speed sensor detects a wheel or tire slipping, the brake control module gently applies the caliper, restoring traction to that tire. Stability control systems also use the vehicle speed sensor, wheel speed sensors and the anti-lock brake system to help keep the automobile straight on the road. A malfunctioning wheel speed sensor is an excellent example of this. If the computer sees a missing wheel speed input signal, it turns on the warning light for all systems that use the information from the sensor. January 31, 2021 What Kind of Limos Are There.
